Design sustainably
with hempcrete

We can design carbon negative dwellings today

Respira helps designers and architects achieve sustainability goals for their projects with affordable and accessible natural building materials.

Respira hemp blocks are:

  • Carbon negative ( -40kg x m3)
  • Zero waste (fully compostable)
  • Outperforms all competing high performance insulating materials
  • No chemical additives

High performance is now affordable.

With RespiraBlocks you can outperform all of your sustainablity, price and thermal performance goals.

Thermal values

80mm block
1 layer = R 3.64
2 layers = R 4.8
120 mm block
1 layer = R 4.2
2 layers = R 5.9
Including R 2.5 insulating batts

Moisture management

Relative Humidity is the gold standard for comfort. Natural materials are vapour permeable and actively regulate internal moisture content.

Fire resistance

Hempcrete as a material resists fire for over 90 minutes and is certified for Firezone graded sites.

No Sick-Building-Syndrome

Is intolerant to bacteria. Prevents mold, mildew, and rising damp. Forget about Asthma and other respiratory issues.

Don't change designs. Change the bricks.

Conventional blockwork isn't good enough anymore. Designers want to push toward higher performance and more sustainable buildings today, and we we want to make it easy for you.

Respira Blocks fit in with existing conventional detailing. Allowing you to 'swap-out' besser block, brick, EPS or Hebel systems without redrafting your project

Respira HempBlock.

Blocks come in two dimensions:
- 500 x 200 x 80 mm
- 500 x 200 x 120 mm

Just a few reasons why Hempcrete
will transform your project.

Seriously energy efficient

Hempcrete's superior insulation, noise dampening, moisture balancing makes it an easy material to use for your project.

Seamless integration with Australian housing

No need to change your design. Hempcrete blocks can be easily applied to the Australian house frame.

Carbon negative

Our Hempcrete blocks are carbon negative, they also work to offset any steel and concrete in your build.

Durable and climate proof

Completely fire, mold and rodent resistant to stand the test of time and the australian conditions.

Installing Respira blocks

Hemp blocks can be place on both sides of the studs frame and simply tied to the frame with brick ties. We even provide a insulative pre mix mortar as part of the order.

1: Lay Respira hempblocks as any blockwork.
2: Secure blocks to stud frame with standard brick ties.
3: Install insulation batts between timber studs.
4: Rough in services.
5: Install second layer of blocks on other side of wall for higher performance.

Cast in place Hempcrete and Respira Blocks for stunning feature walls

Our own unique system of: RespiraBlocks + Cast Hemprete is an uber-convenient alternative to traditional Hempcrete.

Simply clad with RespiraBlocks externally to create a ‘permanent hempcrete formwork’, then hand cast internally for stunning internal feature walls whilst minimising labour costs significantly, making it an absolute game changer here in Australia.

FAQ

Using new materials in your designs can be challenging and intriguing. We will be here to help you all the way.
How expensive are Respira Blocks?

Marginally more than bricks, Respira Blocks start at $100 x m2 for smaller orders.

What make the thermal performance so good?

Here are a few considerations regarding the thermal performance of hempcrete.
Post-occupancy, Hempcrete consistently outperforms other insulative materials of similar R-Values.

This is due to several factors; Natural materials diffuse moisture far quicker and more efficiently than synthetic materials. In fact, standard batts can hold moisture indefinitely if installed moist. And moist materials plummet in actual R-Value.

The passive moisture management properties of Hempcrete manage and pull moisture from the internal living environment, reducing stuffiness and combating Sick Building Syndrome.

The dynamic effect of Hempcrete insulative and thermal mass properties isn't fully captured within an R-Value rating. A wall is only as insulative as its weakest point. A hempcrete wall has no thermal breaks. In Fact you can achieve passive house standard airtightness with a hempcrete building envelope.

How to you run Services in a RespiraBlock wall?

Electrical and Plumbing can be installed within the stud frame just like with standard construction

Do you need any kind of breather or spacer gap between stud frame and Respira Blocks?

There is no requirement for a breather gap between stud and block work. Blocks are brick tied directly to frame.

A. 1 layer = 80mm/120mm Respira Blocks  + 90mm + internal lining

B. 2 layers = 80mm/120mm Respira Blocks + 90mm + 80mm/120mm Respira Blocks

Can I hang heavy items on a Respira Block wall?

You can drill through the blocks and into the stud frame. It is always a good idea to take a photo of the frame before laying the blocks so that you can locate the studs at a later stage.
If you are requiring a fixing point for very heavy items like overhead kitchen cabinets it’s best to have a timber batten installed which sits flush with the internal line of the wall. Due to their density, RespiraBlocks can be cut easily to form around fixing battens.

What kind of finishes are applied to Hempcrete walls?

A lime or Clay render. A natural render on a Hempcrete wall allows you to close down the surface for cleaning and heavy traffic. Rendering also allows you to achieve an aritightness suitable for PassivHaus standards, whilst also maintaining the vapour open of the wall.

Lime render itself is also booming in demand in Australia, even outside of the Hempcrete world, due to its unique and stunning natural tones, textures and finish. We invite you to have a quick look at the work of our preffered producer Lime Mineral Fox.

What kind of Fire Rating does hempcrete have as an external cladding?

Hempcrete as a material resists fire for over 90 minutes, giving it the highest rating of FZ (firezone). You will have to check with the surveyor if they require any further information or if a performance solution is required.
